1. The pen and the writing surface
The machine clamps a real pen — ballpoint, gel, rollerball, or fountain — and lowers it onto the page, then lifts it between strokes. Pen choice changes the look and the reliability: ballpoints are forgiving and fast (and, counterintuitively, the slight inconsistency of a cheap one reads as more human), while gel and fountain pens look more premium but smear or skip if speed and pressure are off. Adjustable pen pressure also controls the faint indentation that recipients can feel — a real authenticity cue.
The writing surface matters just as much. An envelope, a folded card, and a flat sheet each have to be held and fed differently, and stock finish affects ink: a matte surface takes ink cleanly, while double-sided gloss can smear. Always test your exact media.
2. Motion control
Two designs dominate. A flatbed or gantry moves the pen over a stationary sheet; a roller design moves the paper under the pen. Either can produce excellent output — what matters is motion quality: repeatability (does piece #500 look like piece #1?), how cleanly the pen lifts and re-lands between strokes, and how the machine paces curves and connections.
Poor motion control is the giveaway of a cheap machine — shaky lines, blobby pen-downs, inconsistent spacing. Good motion control produces a smooth, confident line that reads as a steady human hand. This is hard to judge from a marketing video; judge it on a real piece.
3. The software and the font
This is where most of the "is it convincing?" battle is won. The "handwriting" is a vector font, but a good one is nothing like Times New Roman: it is built from a real person's writing with many captured variants of every single letter, and the software randomly picks a different version each time plus jitters spacing, baseline, and slant. The result is that the same word, written twice, never looks identical — exactly like a human hand.

A great pen with a clumsy workflow still makes for a slow, error-prone program.
How a typical job runs
Put together, a production run looks like this:
- Prepare the list and write the message (or merge a per-recipient one)
- Set up or reuse a template — stock size, font, layout, fields
- Load a stack of stock and a pen; the machine calibrates on the first piece
- Press go — an auto-feed machine runs the batch unattended (often overnight)
- Quality-check the stack, then insert, stamp, and mail
What determines realism
No single part makes output look real — it is the combination: a real pen with good ink, clean motion control, a properly randomized font, and an appropriately short message (a wall of identical-looking text breaks the illusion). The honest test is simple: look at a finished envelope at arm's length, the way a recipient will. If it reads as personal there, the machine works; a zoomed-in screenshot tells you nothing.
